Bear watching tours in Spain: guided trips in Asturias and Cantabria

A good guided outing is the most reliable and most respectful way to see a brown bear in the wild in northern Spain. Here is what a tour includes, what it costs and how to tell a good guide from one who only sells photos.

In the bear areas of Asturias and Cantabria, wildlife guides go out looking for bears with spotting scopes almost every day. There is no magic to it: they read the land, they know which slopes are active that week and they take you to the right spot in the right light.

That is what you pay for: hours in the field and local knowledge. And it is a way of visiting the bear that leaves money in the valleys that live alongside it.

What a typical tour includes

Most outings last about four hours and start before dawn or in the late afternoon. The group settles at a spot with a good view, the guide sets up the spotting scopes and you scan the slopes; if no bear shows up, you move to another viewpoint. Many add a short walk to read signs: tracks, droppings, marked trees.

Usually the guide provides the optics and you provide the car: you drive between viewpoints in your own vehicle, following the guide. If you are not driving in Spain, look for a multi-day trip with transport included.

How much does bear watching in Spain cost?

Published prices in Asturias range from €30 to €75 per person, most commonly €40–50 for a group outing. Private outings and multi-day wildlife trips, which combine bears with other species, cost more.

Consejo de la casa: In spring and autumn, book several days ahead: groups are small and weekends fill up first.

How to choose a good guide

  • Small groups: fewer people means less disturbance for the bear and a better experience for you.
  • No guarantees: anyone who guarantees a bear can only deliver with bait or by getting too close.
  • Scope and distance: a good guide watches from afar and never tries to get you closer "for the photo".
  • Honesty: they will tell you the real odds for that day and season, even if it is not what you want to hear.
  • Language: confirm before booking that the guide speaks English, or that the agency provides an interpreter.

Where to book

In Somiedo, operators are based in Pola de Somiedo; in Fuentes del Narcea, in Cangas del Narcea; in Liébana, ask in Potes about the week’s outings. The Turismo Asturias website and the local tourist offices list wildlife-watching companies, and several UK-based nature travel agencies run multi-day bear trips to Asturias.
